Short Mat Bowls Report by Selwyn Goldsmith
Friday 9th May 2008

Summer League season starts

Despite the withdrawal of British Legion and Wreningham the size of this season's Norfolk Summer League has increased to 25 with Hingham Blue, Wayland White and Horsford "B" being admitted into Division 3. Once again Div 1 looks a tough place to be with eight time champions Kirby Bedon "A" defending their title. Strong opposition is likely to come from newly crowned Bure League champions East Tuddenham and the ever present threat of Bob Carter and Hevingham "A". Newly promoted teams tend to find survival in the top flight difficult but Thorpe Marriott "A" and Framingham Earl will both hope to prove exceptions to the rule. Last season's relegated teams Watton "A" and Diss Green will both be aiming for an immediate return to Div 1 but Wymondham, who won Div 3 in style last year, could well repeat their success in Div 2. In Div 3 Anglian Windows and Wayland Blue should prove to be the division's pacesetters. The opening Div 1 fixture saw Hevingham "A" win 5-3 at home to Thorpe Marriott "A" but the match included a shock 23-8 defeat for Vic "Quiet Man" Woods against visiting skip Tony Turner.
In Div 2 Banham will be pleased with a 4-4 draw away to Kirby Bedon "B" with Tony Blackburn's triple turning it on with a 20-7 win against Joe Brown.
Div 3 action saw Watton "B" draw 4-4 at Thorpe Marriott "B". Local derby's saw Wayland Blue win 6-2 at Wayland White and Hingham Red beat Hingham Blue 7-1.
The Summer Cup 1st round draw has thrown up two all Div 1 clashes with Hevingham "A" entertaining Sprowston and Thorpe Marriott "A" drawn at home to Kirby Bedon "A". Bob Carter will have an easy passage into the second round courtesy of a home draw against Coronation. The all Div 2 encounter between Horsford "A" and Wymondham could provide the most fascinating tie of the round.

South-East Region Championships 2008
South-East Region Championships
Held at Manea Sat/Sun 29/30 March 2008

Young Norfolk and Wymondham star Chris Mann lifted the South-East Region Singles crown at the first attempt at Manea in Cambs this week. In the final he displayed maturity beyond his years in defeating John Warne of Suffolk 11-5 and left the mat to loud applause from spectators. The experienced Michael Franks, also of Suffolk, was the nineteen year old's victim in the semi-finals where a one-sided encounter saw Mann win 14-5. During the course of the championships Chris Mann also overcame the number one bowlers from Essex, Cambs and Suffolk as Allan Jones, Bob Cousins and Avis Buttress failed to cope with Mann's shot selection and execution. Incredibly this was the eleventh time in twelve years that Norfolk players have won the singles title. In the other disciplines Ian MacLean and Vic Woods of Hevingham reached the semi-finals of the pairs and David Lamb (Halvergate), Kim Bridge, Jean Woods (Carter) and Paul Baker (Hempnall) reached the semi-finals of the fours.

Ruling by E.S.M.B.A Chairman
E.S.M.B.A Chairman rules on new type centre block.

Clubs who have started using the new type blocks fixed to the mat appear to have jumped the gun. E.S.M.B.A chairman Chris Hopkins has stated that they conflict with the current rulebook and should not be used in any official matches or competitions unless part of an officially sanctioned E.S.M.B.A trial. The Norfolk Management Committee last week decided to inform its member clubs that the blocks should not be used until such time as the E.S.M.B.A sanctions their use. Any clubs who have obtained these blocks must now refrain from using them in any official games although they can of course use them within their own clubs for roll-ups etc.

National 2007 / 2008 Mixed Fours
National Mixed Fours Final - report.

Connaught's Sheila Bragg, Andrew Stratton and Russell Hales, playing with Bob Carter's Sue Hunt in an all-county squad rink, produced a run of superb results to reach the final of the National Mixed Fours Championships in Northants. Unfortunately they found the vastly experienced Shropshire star Chris Shakeshaft and his rink in dazzling form and suffered an 11-2 defeat which gave Shakeshaft a third national title to add to his 1998 pairs and 1996 triples titles. The Sheila Bragg skipped rink opened in style beating an Oxfordshire rink by 15-2 before adding wins against London and Gloucestershire to emerge with maximum points from the group stages. In the last 16 round Bragg's rink easily beat Wiltshire by 11-2 to earn a quarter-final place against Hampshire who also proved easy prey for the on song Norfolk bowlers who rattled up an 18-9 win. Chris Bundy's Essex four were their opponents in the semi-finals which was a surprise to anyone who saw Bundy's rink humiliated 23-1 in their opening group game against Shropshire before picking themselves up to force their way through. This was one round too far for Bundy's rink though who could not match the skill of the Norfolk rink which led by 12-2 when Essex conceded. In the final Sandra Barker, Margaret Price, Chris Williams and Chris Shakeshaft of Shropshire quickly established control and were worthy winners but Sheila Bragg's rink can be proud of their runners-up position after some excellent bowling throughout the day.
