Since the formation of the Norfolk County Short Mat Bowls Association competitions have been held to determine County Champions and National qualifiers.

Prior to 2002/2003 the Mixed Fours was purely a qualifying competition for the Nationals, but from 2002/2003 was given full County Championship status.

From 1995 the County Championships have also been used as a qualifying event for the South East Region Championships. Prior to that year South East Region Championships were selected from the County Squad.
